About & Methodology

Patch analysis, not guesswork.

PatchSage turns Blizzard’s patch notes into an updated PvP tier list within minutes of every release — AI-driven analysis anchored to how the best arena analysts actually think.

Ranked on kit — not popularity

Rankings are based purely on a spec’s kit, evaluated through the eight factors below. We do not factor in ladder representation, play rate, or how many players are currently playing a spec. A strong but underplayed spec still ranks highly if its kit earns it.

The pipeline

How it works

01

Patch notes, scraped automatically

The moment Blizzard publishes new PvP balance notes, PatchSage detects and scrapes them — no manual data entry, no waiting.

02

AI analyzes every buff and nerf

A purpose-built analyzer reads each change and weighs it against the current standings using the eight-factor framework below — judging impact across 2v2, 3v3, and Solo Shuffle.

03

Specs ranked before the meta settles

An updated S–D tier list publishes within minutes — so you know what got strong before the ladder catches up and the new meta hardens.

How specs are judged

The 8-factor framework

Every spec is scored 1–5 on each of eight factors, then synthesized into a single tier. A spec strong across most factors ranks highly; one gated by a punishable burst window, thin defensives, or prevalent hard counters drops even with a high skill ceiling.

1

Burst Window

How big, frequent, and predictable a spec's damage windows are — and how punishable they are to interrupt or peel.

2

Defensive Durability

Self-healing, defensive cooldowns, reset capability, and survivability while focused.

3

Crowd Control

Quality, frequency, and diminishing-return efficiency of stuns, silences, fears, and roots.

4

Mobility

Uptime, kite potential, and escapes — staying on a target or getting away from one.

5

1v1 Viability

Solo strength, especially for Solo Shuffle and Battleground Blitz.

6

Comp Synergy

How well the spec enables or pairs with other strong specs in the current meta.

7

Hard Counters

Which meta specs shut this spec down, and how prevalent those counters are right now.

8

Complexity vs Reward

Whether the skill ceiling justifies the placement, and whether an average player can extract the value.

Where the rankings start

The baseline

Season 1 rankings were anchored to an established PvP analyst’s tier list at launch — a credible, expert starting point grounded in real arena standings rather than a blank slate.

From there, every spec moves patch by patch: each analysis starts from the previous tier list and applies only the changes the new notes justify. That continuity keeps placements stable and explainable instead of swinging wildly from one week to the next.

Setting expectations

What it is — and isn't

It isn’t

  • ×Not pure opinion or hot takes.
  • ×Not based on ladder representation or play rate.

It is

AI-driven patch analysis, anchored to expert knowledge — the speed and consistency of automation, grounded in how a veteran analyst reads a balance change.

Always current

Update frequency

Rankings refresh automatically whenever Blizzard publishes new patch notes— there’s no fixed schedule and no manual trigger. A new balance pass goes live, PatchSage analyzes it, and the tier list updates. Between patches, the list stays put.
